GENERAL ASSISTANT

 

 

Construction worker

 

Blaxland Public School is committed to ensuring a safe working environment, promoting safe working practices.

The General Assistant is employed for one day per week.

Potential Hazard

Management Controls -  Recommendations:

Sun Burn
Heat Exhaustion

  • bottled water
  • long sleeved shirt / and long trousers
  • hat / sunscreen
  • outdoor work early in the morning
  • indoor work during the heat of the day - if possible
  • break up long jobs over a number of days
  • regular breaks

Wet Weather / Storms

  • inside work
  • protective rainwear
  • no outdoor work during electrical storms / hail storms.

Risks of Cuts / Abrasions / Flying Debris/ Falls, Slips

  • protective / safety clothing / wear eg gloves, shin pads, safety glasses, steel capped safety shoes
  • inform principal of safety wear to be purchased

Emergencies

  • see Emergency Policy

Manual Handling

  • trolleys for transporting heavy / awkward items
  • where necessary specialist delivery / equipment or people will be hired

Ladders / Climbing

  • climbing is limited to 1 .8m
  • climbing from the ladder onto a tree / roof etc is to have a support person holding the ladder
  • last 2 steps of the ladder are not to be used

Glass / Sharps

  • needles must be picked up using protective gloves and placed into a needle container which is brought to the sight of the needle and sealed prior to removing the needle for appropriate disposal
  • foreign objects must be removed prior to mowing / whipper snipping

Mowing / Whipper Snipping

  • check area for foreign objects prior to work
  • inspect equipment prior to use
  • wear protective wear such as goggles, shin pads, enclosed shoes, hat, long sleeves and trousers
  • mouth and nose filter in dry / dusty conditions
  • must be 20m clear of people
  • observe hot weather arrangements
  • break every 1hr – depending on conditions
  • refill petrol in a safe area – use goggles, gloves and mask – turn off engine
  • return petrol to safe room immediately after use
  • turn whole body when whipper snipping
  • turn whipper snipper off when adjusting the head or refuelling

Chemicals, Petrol, Oils, Paints, Poisons Graffiti removal 

  • store safely away from people
  • read instructions carefully
  • wear appropriate safety gear

Equipment Maintenance

  • equipment to be visually inspected
  • basic maintenance required prior to use
  • major maintenance is reported to the principal – equipment not used until repaired appropriately

Pressure Gurney

  • appropriate shoes and protective wear – depending on conditions
  • used outside student school hours

Difficult Students

  • Child Protection Policy in place
  • GA to refer difficulties to a teacher / Principal – only interceding if a student is in danger
  • students may only work with the GA e.g. gardening when under the supervision of a teacher

Verbal / Physical Abuse

  • avoid conflict / refer to the Principal / Police – if appropriate

Electrical Work

  • replacement of light bulbs or light tubes only  and when other staff are present
  • wooden ladder to be used
  • lights to be turned off
  • carry 1 tube up the ladder at a time

Personal Security

  • maintain building security
  • avoid confrontation – ring police if necessary
  • sign on and off accurately
  • avoid using ladders / lifting heavy / awkward items until others are present

General

  • report hazards to the principal
  • avoid potentially dangerous situations
  • report contractors / other members of the school community placing themselves and other at risk.
